Baby Kisses & HSV: What You Really Need to Know!
You’ve probably heard the warnings! “Don’t let anyone kiss your baby!” Some parents are terrified of passing on the herpes simplex virus (HSV), even from family. BUT how risky is it really?!

What is HSV?
HSV is a virus that causes cold sores (HSV-1) or genital herpes (HSV-2). While very common (68% of people carry HSV-!) it’s usually harmless to adults and older children. For babies under 6 months, however, their underdeveloped immune systems makes them more vulnerable.

Transmission
Most infections come from their mother during birth (vaginal or cesarean) Postpartum transmission from other is rare, especially if the person doesn’t have an active cold sore.

Symptoms to Watch For
If HSV infection does occur, symptoms in infants can include: fever or poor feeding, small blisters around the mouth, eyes or skin, lethargy, excessive crying, or seizures.
If you notice anything unusual, contact your pediatrician. Early treatment is key.

Wash hands before holding baby, skip kisses if anyone has a cold sore.
